The Life and Times of a Boy from Clarks, Louisiana
This book is about growing up in the small town of Clarks, Louisiana in the early 1900's. Howard loved
this little town, and it broke his heart when his family moved to California in 1927 and he
had to start school in a new strange place like Long Beach, California. He was a southerner,
and he missed his friends in Clarks. He loved playing in the woods around Clarks and playing beside the
little stream called "The Branch" that ran through town. In this book, Howard tells a lot about
what fun he had in Clarks, and he tells about later when he rode freight trains and looked for
gold in the Mother Lode Country of California. He almost bought a shrimp boat in Florida, and he
became a seaman and was in a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico. He had U.S. patents on two toys that
he invented, and he would try out his new ideas on his nieces and nephew. One nephew said that
Uncle Howard taught him to take time to enjoy nature and the simple things of life, and they would
always beg Uncle Howard to tell them stories. One niece grew up to be a teacher and insisted that
Uncle Howard write these stories. Now that he is gone, we are so glad he wrote them. They
said everyone should grow up having an Uncle Howard. I hope the art of "family story telling" will never be
lost.
